“Home from Home in the home of Golf”

“Yorkston Guest House in St Andrews has been owned by our family since 1955. My grandmother started this business, and it was continued by my mother and father. They had the opportunity to purchase the neighbouring house in the 1960's. This enabled the guest house to be enlarged to its present size. Of course there have been, and continue to be, many changes and updates to the house, moving with the times and visitor expectations.
I grew up in the guest house and it seemed a natural progression after college and working in a bank to return to it. It is a pleasure to be able to work with my own daughter Fiona, who has been my right hand here for the last 15 years after she completed her Degree at Dundee University. Fiona takes an active role in the local Hotel and Guest House Association 'Stay in St Andrews' and has been on the committee for the last 5 years. During this time, she has overseen the launch of a new website that allows guest to contact guest houses and book direct, produced 2 editions of the St Andrews map and guide – which are free to all visitors to the town and made a short video promoting the town centre for social media.
The guest house has 10 bedrooms, and it keeps us very busy. Any spare time is spent in the garden and this year has been particularly successful as we won first prize in the Community Council’s Garden Competition (guest houses). When our home-grown rhubarb is in season, it features on our breakfast menu and whenever possible we showcase Scotland's wonderful larder of food. We are proud to use the very best local suppliers and produce.
The best part of what we do is welcoming guests from all over the world, many of whom are making the trip of a lifetime. It's an absolute privilege to be part of these happy memories.
We are really proud that four generations of our family have been involved in running the family guest house, welcoming and looking after visitors to the wonderful town of St Andrews since 1955!”
