We have run the Kingsway Guest House for almost 15 years. Both of us were born in Edinburgh and it will come as no surprise that we have a natural enthusiasm for and wealth of knowledge of our beautiful historic hometown.
After undergoing a top to toe renovation, this 150 year-old Victorian property is now an award winning guest house offering comfortable, quality rooms with personable service. And importantly we are proud to offer one of the best, award winning breakfasts in Edinburgh!
Before taking on the Kingsway, I worked in PR for ten years while Gary spent twenty years in banking. My first taste of hospitality was working during holidays in my student days as a butler at Drummond Castle in Perthshire catering for lords and ladies at private parties. It was a wonderful experience living in a castle, working with antiques, and meeting very high levels of expectation.
We both love chatting with our guests and trying to help them enjoy every moment of their stay by sharing our local knowledge. Such personal service is one of the great things about staying in a guest house and we welcome many of our guests back year after year. We believe that guest houses offer amazing value for money and have been way ahead of hotels in offering inclusive services such as parking, breakfast and Wi-Fi. Similarly, we have recently added an EV charging station to our off-street private car park as we know just how important it is to support sustainable tourism. In fact, we are the first guest house in Edinburgh to offer electric vehicle charging.
As mentioned above, we are famous for our award-winning breakfasts and the Kingsway has received the AA Breakfast Award seven times in recognition of excellence and emphasis of freshly prepared local produce.
Each morning guests can enjoy Gary’s full cooked Scottish breakfast. This includes traditional haggis, local butcher sausages, homemade potato scones and free-range farm eggs. We are often complimented on Gary’s fantastic poached eggs which he perfected with help from the Michelin chef Martin Wishart’s Cook School. We offer fresh ground coffee and an extensive range of teas including local Shibui herbals to help ease you into the day. Plus cereals, fruit and yoghurt parfait, and jams homemade by Lizzie’s dad using fruits from his allotment. As a special treat guests may enjoy Gary’s homemade flapjacks and homemade banana bread, both delicious! Our daily specials offer an alternative to the usual cooked breakfast. Ideal for those looking for something special or who are travelling for a longer period and so appreciate a little more variation.
Our popular daily specials include Loch Fyne smoked salmon and free range scrambled eggs on sourdough, and huevos rancheros. Favourites include free range 3 egg omelette with wilted spinach and goats cheese, and asparagus with parma ham and parmesan, poached eggs and hollandaise. For guests requiring an early start to the day for tours or flights, we offer a convenient and tasty take away continental breakfast bag.
As you can see, we take breakfast very seriously! So that each and every day, our award winning and freshly cooked breakfasts using tasty local produce, will set up our guests perfectly for a busy day’s sightseeing around historic Edinburgh”.
