“Wildlife friendly Eco chic B&B”
As told by Peter Moss OBE
“My wife Tina and I have owned Huntingtower Lodge since 2017.
Two miles out of Fort William, with large grounds and set well back from the road, all rooms have extensive views over Loch Linnhe and provide our guests with a great base to explore the West Highlands.
Prior to our lovely new life in the Highlands, I was an aircrew officer in the Royal Navy and Tina managed teams of civilians and police officers across two police forces in England. As a mountain leader, I have spent a lot of time in the hills of Scotland and Tina has always been an exceptional cook. The culmination of putting these two areas of knowledge together was the purchase of Huntingtower Lodge where my role is front of house and Tina prepares the delicious breakfasts, all cooked to order.
Because we are passionate about countryside matters, wildlife and the environment, Huntingtower Lodge is an Eco B&B which is wildlife friendly and run on as green a policy as possible. For example, a solar heat exchanger warms the water before going to the boiler which saves a significant amount of energy. Around the house, wildflower meadows are abundant, 24 bird boxes (including two owl boxes) can be found both close to the house and in the 6 acres of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) woodland that forms part of the grounds behind the property. Bat boxes provide homes for bats during the summer months and the wildlife pond is full of frogs in early spring (notwithstanding those eaten by the visiting otters each evening!) Any waste food is either composted or fed to the birds on several bird tables where pine martens visit regularly to take any left-over home-made cake or toast. In season, breakfast tomatoes come from the greenhouse, tattie scones are made from potatoes grown in the garden, bread is made by Tina, with marmalade and the chutney for the ‘Stornoway Stacks’ made by me!
With our intimate knowledge of the West Highlands, over breakfast I love to discuss our guests plans for the day and give ideas for walks and drives out to see places that are off the beaten track and less visited by tourists. A range of maps annotated with useful information are also loaned to our guests for their days out. In summary, guests staying at Huntingtower Lodge have a very comfortable, relaxing break, exceptional home cooked food and great advice to explore the area and see sights they did not expect to see”
